The first step in training a puppy is to make sure he knows his name. Call his name every time you do something or want him to do something. Teach him that he needs to run to you when his name is called. You should make sure your puppy learns their name and knows to respond to it. Be sure to spend lots of quality time with your puppy, so that he will learn to know and trust you. Over time, the puppy will be able to learn more advanced training.

When a behavioral problem suddenly occurs you should take the dog to the vet to eliminate health problems. Certain health conditions or some pains can make your dog act out. This behavior is an indicator to humans that there is something wrong.

A puppy should have chew toys to get him through the teething pains. Keep other things out of his reach. You need to replace that with a designated chew toy. A frozen washcloth is a great way to help your pup ease his teething pain.

You want to mentally stimulate your dog in order to keep it healthy and happy. Try taking him for a walk around the neighborhood or filling his toys with peanut butter. Any dog who is bored will find a number of ways to amuse himself and spend his time, such as chomping your favorite pair of shoes or digging up your prized botanical collection!

Use a phrase on your puppy to house train him. When you are outside with the puppy, say the chosen phrase to keep him focused on the task he is to accomplish.

You should start training your dog at an early age. Training it as a puppy is the best time to do so. This isn't always true, but the younger the animal, the more responsive to training he is. If you train your dog from an early age, he will become an obedient pet and a close friend.

Use your dog's name whenever you are offering it a treat. You will not be able to control your dog if you do not get his attention first. Use his name at least 10 times each day. Also, it is very inappropriate for you to call the dog over to you and then punish him, as this will teach him to fear you and discourage him from coming when called.

Learn to incorporate positive reinforcement when training, in place of treat based rewards. You will find that treats do work. You probably do not carry treats with you 365 days a year when you are not in an "official" training session. Petting and showing love to the dog are also good ways to reward your dog. You can use these kinds of positive reinforcements to encourage good behavior in addition to treats.

When potty training your dog, stay away from wee-wee pads. The potty pads or the wee-wee pads often leak which can leave enzymes behind that will confuse the puppy as to where they should be going potty. Wee-wee pads can also train your dog to think that other items that are the same shape are a potty area as well. Instead, it is far preferable to teach your pet that outdoors is the only acceptable place to relieve itself.

An untrained dog can destroy your house, as was previously mentioned. Armed with these tips, you should be adequately prepared to work with your dog, providing valuable skills and behavioral guidance.
